It depends on how old the street is. In North River Ranch, Silverleaf and the other new communities built on former pasture, fire ants surface in fresh sod and ghost ants find the plumbing and AC openings in the slab during the first year. Harrison Ranch and Forest Creek, a few years older, see subterranean termite interest in mature mulch beds and chinch bugs in St. Augustine lawns. The older homes along US 301, State Road 62 and Erie Road deal with rats and mice in barns and sheds, and with termite colonies in soil that was never treated.

Because the lot was pasture a short time ago and the house is still settling in. Grading moves fire ant colonies around rather than removing them, and they reappear in the new sod. The openings where plumbing, AC lines and conduit pass through the slab are the route ghost ants, roaches and spiders use before the builder's sealant has cured and the landscaping has filled in. A barrier in the first year costs less than clearing a colony that has had a year to spread.

The subdivisions sit beside a lot of open land and water: Gamble Creek, the Manatee River below the Fort Hamer Bridge, the Little Manatee River to the north and the preserve land in between. New yards also have little tree cover, so nothing breaks up the flight paths. Anyone buying or selling in this corridor should get a WDO inspection.
